About VISIA Skin Analysis

What Is VISIA Skin Analysis?

VISIA is a facial imaging system built by Canfield Scientific, the company widely considered the gold standard in aesthetic imaging. It captures high-resolution, standardized photos of your face using multiple lighting modes, then runs those images through analysis that measures eight distinct skin features. The result is a detailed report you can see and understand.

The technology reads far more than your skin’s surface. Standard photography shows you what’s visible today. VISIA looks deeper, picking up UV damage sitting below the skin that hasn’t yet appeared as a visible spot, along with underlying redness and porphyrins that hint at how your skin is behaving over time. It then compares your scores against thousands of other people in your age range and skin type, which gives context to whether a concern is typical or potentially worth addressing.

What VISIA Measures

The Eight Features VISIA Reads

Every scan breaks your complexion down into eight measurable categories, each scored and mapped directly onto your photo:

  • Spots: visible pigmentation on the surface
  • Wrinkles: fine lines and deeper creases
  • Texture: smoothness and evenness of the skin’s surface
  • Pores: size and visibility of enlarged pores
  • UV spots: sun damage sitting below the surface, not yet visible
  • Brown spots: pigment concentrated in the deeper layers
  • Red areas: inflammation, redness and vascular concerns
  • Porphyrins: bacteria-related buildup in pores that can drive breakouts

Then comes the number our patients react to most: TruSkin Age®. This score estimates how old your skin looks based on all of those measurements combined. We’ve had patients in their late 50s learn their skin reads years younger after a series of treatments, and honestly, that moment is hard to beat.

What to Expect

Your VISIA Experience, Start to Finish

Before Your Scan

There’s very little you need to do prior to your appointment. Arrive with a clean face when possible, since makeup, heavy sunscreen and skincare products can affect what the camera reads. If you’re coming straight from work, don’t worry; our team can cleanse your skin before the imaging starts.

During Your Scan

You’ll rest your chin in a positioning cradle while the camera captures your face across several lighting modes. The imaging itself takes only a few minutes and is completely comfortable, with no heat, no contact and nothing invasive. Because positioning and lighting are standardized every time, your images stay consistent from visit to visit, which is what makes accurate comparisons possible down the road.

After Your Scan

This is where it gets interesting. Your provider walks you through the results on-screen, pointing out what each map means and how your scores compare with your peer group. From there, the conversation shifts to which treatments make sense for your specific concerns.

Christina’s Real Results

Our own provider Christina McDonald put this to the test using Plated skincare on her under-eye area and Moxi BBL for overall skin quality, and her VISIA scans documented the change over time. In VISIA’s wrinkle category, the darker green lines show deeper wrinkles, and the light green shows fine lines, both of which are reduced in the second photo. This kind of visual evidence helps you understand what’s working and where to focus next, and it keeps your plan grounded in data rather than hope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does VISIA hurt?

Not at all. It’s simply a series of photographs. There’s no contact with your skin, no heat and no discomfort of any kind.

How is VISIA different from a regular skin consultation?

A standard consultation relies on what a provider can see with the naked eye. VISIA adds objective measurement, revealing sun damage and other concerns beneath the surface that aren’t yet visible, then scoring them against your peer group.

Who performs the VISIA analysis?

Every member of our team is trained and certified on the VISIA system, from our licensed aestheticians to our physician assistants to our nurse practitioners, all of whom bring years of skin expertise to reading your results. The whole approach reflects how Dr. Stephen Vega built this practice: care that treats the whole person, backed by real medical training rather than sales pressure.

Can VISIA show me what I'll look like after treatment?

No. VISIA measures and analyzes your current skin. Predicting outcomes is a separate visualization tool. What VISIA gives you is an accurate baseline and, later, proof of progress.

How often should I get a VISIA scan?

We recommend a baseline before starting a skincare or treatment plan, then follow-up scans roughly three months after a treatment series so we can track real change over time.

Your Skin, Finally in Focus

Guessing at your skincare is expensive in every sense. VISIA replaces the guessing with a clear, measurable picture and a plan built around what your skin truly needs. Come see the version of your complexion your bathroom mirror keeps hiding, and let our team show you exactly where to go from there.
