What Is

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

At Vega Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we offer a comprehensive solution called a mommy makeover. Despite its name, this highly customizable treatment isn’t just for mothers. It’s for anyone looking to address multiple body concerns and restore their confidence and natural beauty. Dr. Stephen Vega and our compassionate team understand that every body is unique, and we carefully tailor each makeover to match your individual goals and expectations.

A mommy makeover is a personalized combination of surgical procedures designed to restore and enhance your body contours. While traditionally associated with post-pregnancy concerns, this comprehensive approach benefits anyone dealing with changes to their breasts and abdomen due to weight fluctuations, aging, genetics or life events. By combining multiple surgical procedures in a single session, patients achieve dramatic results while minimizing total recovery time and cost.

Dr. Vega works closely with each patient, asking questions to learn more about their concerns and aesthetic goals in order to create a fully tailored treatment plan. Procedures commonly included in a mommy makeover are breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck and liposuction. Mommy makeover surgery can be any combination of procedures, and your plan will be designed specifically for you.

What Does

What Does a Mommy Makeover Treat?

Common concerns addressed in a mommy makeover include:

  • Changes in breast size, shape and position
  • Loose or excess abdominal skin
  • Separated abdominal muscles
  • Stubborn fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise
  • Loss of body contour and proportion
  • Stretch marks
  • Overall changes in body shape or weight

Breast Enhancement Procedures

Pregnancy, weight changes, genetics and aging can all impact breast appearance. Some patients experience volume loss that leaves breasts looking deflated, while others struggle with sagging or asymmetry. In some cases, breasts may become larger than desired, causing both aesthetic concerns and physical discomfort.

Dr. Vega offers the following comprehensive breast enhancement options:

Breast augmentation: Dr. Vega specializes in personalized breast augmentation procedures and revisions for women looking to enhance breast volume and shape. Silicone and saline breast implants, each with unique benefits, are available.

Breast lift: Also known as mastopexy, breast lift surgery addresses breast ptosis (sagging) by removing excess skin and repositioning breast tissue. The size of the areola can also be reduced, if desired. Techniques include:

  • A periareolar “donut lift” addresses mild ptosis
  • A vertical lift can address moderate sagging
  • An inverted-T lift can address more advanced sagging

Breast reduction: Whether your breast size concerns are purely cosmetic or if you’re experiencing back or shoulder pain due to overly large breasts, breast reduction with Dr. Vega can restore your comfort while creating beautiful, natural-looking contours.

Tummy Tuck for Abdominal Restoration

The middle and lower abdominal areas typically experience the most dramatic changes from various life events. Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, aging and genetics can all contribute to:

  • Loose, sagging skin that won’t respond to exercise
  • Separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • A protruding belly despite core strengthening efforts
  • Excess fat deposits

Dr. Vega offers abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck” surgery, to address the above issues by removing excess fat and skin from the abdomen while tightening the abdominal muscle walls. Beyond aesthetic improvements, this procedure may also enhance core strength, improve posture, assist with bladder control and reduce the risk of hernias.

Liposuction for Stubborn Fat Deposits

Sometimes diet and exercise aren’t enough to eliminate stubborn fat pockets. Liposuction provides a precise, sculptural approach to body contouring. Using the tumescent “super-wet” technique, Dr. Vega carefully removes unwanted fat through small incisions, reshaping treatment areas for smooth, natural-looking results.

Candidates

Am I a Candidate for Mommy Makeover?

The ideal candidate for a mommy makeover is someone who:

  • Is in good overall health
  • Has realistic expectations about results
  • Is within 10 to 15 pounds of their ideal weight
  • Has maintained a stable weight for at least one year
  • Can commit to the recovery process
  • Doesn’t plan on having future pregnancies
  • Is a non-smoker or willing to quit

Health Considerations

Your safety is our priority. Certain medical conditions, including immune disorders or bleeding problems, may affect your candidacy. Dr. Vega will thoroughly review your health history during your consultation to determine whether this procedure is right for you.

Setting Realistic Expectations

While mommy makeovers can produce dramatic and long-lasting results, realistic expectations are crucial for satisfaction. During your consultation, Dr. Vega will show you mommy makeover before and after photos and discuss what’s achievable for your specific situation.

Recovery Commitment

A successful mommy makeover requires dedication to the recovery process. You’ll need to take several weeks away from strenuous activities, including lifting anything over 10 pounds. Time off from work is dependent on individual job requirements but could be as little as three to four weeks. A commitment to healthy eating is also necessary to support healing and maintain results.

How Should I Prepare for a Mommy Makeover?

Pre-treatment preparation is a crucial part of the overall treatment plan and can significantly affect your outcome. Dr. Vega will provide you with comprehensive pre-operative instructions tailored to your specific procedures and other individual circumstances.

Successfully preparing for a mommy makeover includes being medically cleared, managing medications as directed and following various logistical and lifestyle-related guidelines to facilitate all aspects of the recovery process.

  • Medical clearance: Prior to mommy makeover surgery, you may require clearance. This may entail blood work, a mammogram or other tests depending on your age and health status.
  • Medication changes: If applicable, certain medications and supplements you are taking may need to be temporarily discontinued prior to surgery. For example, anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin and some herbal supplements may interfere with the healing process or increase your risk of certain complications.
  • Work, childcare and transportation arrangements: As applicable, arranging for extended childcare assistance and transportation will facilitate a smoother recovery process. Setting up a comfortable recovery area at home, with water, snacks and everything else you need nearby, will also promote a smooth recovery.
  • Lifestyle modifications: It’s essential to stop smoking and vaping at least six weeks before any surgery and throughout the entire recovery process. Tobacco and nicotine delays healing, and a cotinine test will be performed one week before surgery to detect nicotine use. Alcohol consumption should also be limited. Eating a nutritionally dense diet with at least 60 grams of protein per day and essential vitamins will further support healing.

Process

The Mommy Makeover Treatment Process

The first step in a successful mommy makeover is the consultation. During this one-on-one appointment, Dr. Vega will examine your concerns, discuss your goals and answer your questions to formulate a customized surgical plan. The surgical planning process typically includes reviewing before and after photos, deciding which procedures you want incorporated and communicating your expectations.

On the Day of Surgery

Once you are comfortable and ready for the treatment to begin, you will be given general anesthesia. Depending on the number of procedures involved, surgery takes between two and five hours.

Immediately after your procedure, you’ll spend some time in recovery before being discharged home with a responsible adult. You will be provided all the surgical dressings, compression garments and, if applicable, drainage tubes.

Follow-Up Care

A consistent follow-up schedule will allow our providers to monitor and assess your healing progress, making any adjustments or addressing issues if they arise. Generally, your first follow-up will be scheduled within a few days of your surgery. Additional visits will be scheduled throughout the recovery period to maintain an effective post-treatment plan.

Recovery and Results

Mommy Makeover Recovery and Results

A successful recovery process requires patience and consistency, but following Dr. Vega’s instructions carefully and reporting back for follow-ups can make your experience comfortable and successful.

Month one: Immediately following your procedure, post-treatment swelling and discomfort are expected. Compression garments and pain medication will help alleviate these issues. You will be advised not to lift, push or pull anything weighing more than 10 pounds. As you progress through weeks three and four, you may be cleared to return to light desk work and gentle activities like walking. Swelling should begin to subside during this time.

Month two: By this point, your swelling and discomfort will be significantly, though perhaps not entirely, resolved. Most patients are cleared for normal daily activities, including light exercises, during this time on a gradually increasing basis.

Three to six months: Most patients are cleared to return to all of their usual activities during this time. Your scars will continue healing and begin to fade. We recommend using SPF daily, massaging the area, applying scar cream and using tape to help your scars heal optimally and become inconspicuous.

The full healing process takes up to a year. Scars transition and fade throughout the first year. Depending on the procedures included in your mommy makeover, you will notice the following improvements as swelling gradually reveals your full results:

  • Improved breast shape, size and position
  • Flatter, tighter abdomen with sagging skin removed
  • Improved body contours and proportions
  • Stronger and more stable core
